8.24.03 - Last Kayak trip of the quickly ending 2003 warm summer weather out to the Elkhorn Slough at Moss Landing. Great day with friends out on the water (http://www.montereybaykayaks.com) - Shot entirely with Sony DSC U-30
8.30.03 - For my Birthday, Dayna took me to the Big Island of Hawai'i to stay at the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort in Ka`upulehu-Kona (http://www.fourseasons.com/hualalai/). From August 30th til September 2, was just lost in this beautiful resort and wonderful island. Even though Hurricane Jimena came through in the middle of the trip, it did not spoil the fun, in fact, it produced some spectacular sunsets that were captured here. "Sorry, the beach is closed due to the hurricane" - Looking up at the blue sky, "Umm, Seriously?" (Shot with the Canon 10D and the Canon 28-200 f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens)
9.14.03 - Took the day to enjoy Monterey, California, with friends - primarily as a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (http://www.mbayaq.org/) - Did not have the 10D with me, but the Sony U-30 was able to capture some great shots. MBA has a great Jelly exhibit as well as an impressive Deep Sea Outer Bay Tank - Shot entirely with Sony DSC U-30
11.1.03 - For Dayna's birthday, I celebrated by surprising her with a weekend at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in San Francisco. Even though we live a mere 40minutes away from SF, we never get to experience all the city has to offer. With a great hotel as our base camp, we traveled around Chinatown, North Beach, and whatever else the City had to offer. Sierra enjoyed the trip too as the Mandarin allows pets - check out the complimentary Evian water and food bowls for the four legged guests. (http://www.mandarinoriental.com/San Francisco) Shot with Canont 10D and the 70-200 f/2.8L, the Sigma 15mm Fisheye, and the Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lenses
11.2.03 - Finally reopened and remodeled, the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park (http://www.conservatoryofflowers.org/) opened its gates once again. From its origins in 1876 to modern day, the Conservatory houses five habitats within its glass walls - Lowland Tropics, Aquatics, Potted Plants, Highland Tropics, and Special Exhibits. ( Shot with Canon 10D and 70-200 f/2.8L and Sigma 15mm Fisheye
9.6.03 - Closed game of friends and other friends and their friends - 25 brave souls in total. Lowe setup a closed game for all of us and dubbed it the highly anticipated, "Pirates of Santa Clara Paintball." The trip was first time for a lot of people so definitely made for a lot of good targets - oh, I mean, a lot of fun times and learning experiences. The day's highlight had to have been the all-girl game where the ladies took the field for a highly charged game. And I quote Dayna, "SURRENDER!! Ah, Crap!!" - (http://www.santaclarapaintball.com/) ( Shot entirely with Sony DSC U-30 |

11.8.03 - On a whim, decided to head up to our old spot in the city, Louie's cafe off Highway 1 overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Cliff Houses. Debbie and Sophia were free as well, so joined us for some breakfast ... at 7PM (Shot with Canon 10D and Canon 70-200 f/2.8L and Canon 28-135 USM IS)
11.17.03 - First trip to the San Francisco Zoo as new 2003/2004 Zoo members. The day was kind of overcast with a sprinkling of rain here and there, but the animals did not seem to care, so neither did we. The River otters and Birds of Prey exhibits provide an excellent opportunity to get close to the animals and makes for some great shots - (http://www.sfzoo.org/) Primarily used the Canon 10D with the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM lens
11.29.03 - The First trip to Kirkwood for the 2003/2004 season, and Dayna's first opportunity on a snowboard. She was rocking as she led her beginners class in "connecting turns" and is already on her way to get her season pass. Snow was bad, weather was dark, but a bad day at snowboarding is never a bad day - (http://www.kirkwood.com/) Shot entirely with Sony DSC U-30
12.6.03 - Back up to Kirkwood for the second weekend in a row for some more snowboarding. Storm beat us there, so was snowing pretty much the entire day - crowds were low and the pow was rising, so made for a great day. Day was overcast the entire day, and hovered around 34 degrees - Shot with Canon 10D with the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM lens
12.31.03 - Last Day of 2003, and decided to gather up the other New Year lone stars and head up for a hike at Goat Rock off the Castle Rock State Park hiking trail. Along with Scott, Dayna, Lowe and Doreen, we headed to the summit, and captured a spectacular view of the outgoing storm that had dumped rain the entire week. - Shot primarily with the Canon 10D and Canon 24-70 f/2.8L USM Lens |

1.3.04 - First sunny day of the new year, and we had to get outside. Went to Hakone Gardens in Saratoga, California (http://www.hakone.com) with Dayna, Doreen and Brian. Was a pretty chilly day, with the sun quickly dropping behind the Saratoga Hills - Shot with Canon 10D and Canon 24-70 and Canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM lenses
1.4.04 - First trip to Land's End Coastal Trail in the Golden Gate National Recreation Park. After lunch at Louie's Cafe we headed off onto the Land's End Hike with a goal to make it to the Golden Gate Bridge - distracted by just about everything along the way, we made it about half way. Turned out to be a 3 mile hike with Dayna, Lowe, Doreen, and Sierra. Great timing when we started gave us a chance to play in the surf and enjoy the sunset as we walked back. Shot with pretty much everything in the bag (Canon 10D - 70-200, 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens, Sigma 15mm)
1.10.04 - Weekend up at Kirkwood to enjoy the snow. Lowe had rented a cabin at Kirkwood Basecamp, so we headed up on Saturday morning and spent the night. Dayna, Doreen, and Brandi were off taking snowboard lessons, so Lowe, Lance and I headed out to cruise the rest of the mountain. First time we were at Tahoe this season and had sun, so Lowe and I were sure to catch some pictures from summit. We do not know the guy in the crashing sequence, but it was pretty damn funny. Shot with Canon 10D - 70-200, 24-70 f/2.8L USM lenses
1.16.04 - After Dayna took me out to have dinner at Citizen Cake, we went on a photo exploration of San Francisco - captured some pics at the Palace of Fine Arts, then headed across the Golden Gate Bridge to take advantage of the relatively fogless night and sights of the bridge. (Canon 10D - 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens)
1.18.04 - Taking advantage of a good weather Sunday, we headed to the Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. Sun was dropping quickly, but we got to see the gardens and take some model shots of Dayna :) - went to Botanical Gardens to finish up the day. (Canon 10D - 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8L USM lens)
2.8.04 - Great weekend to head up to the slopes. Spent the weekend at South Shore with the family, and joined the rest of the friend gang at Kirkwood on Sunday - Weather was great, and Dayna is now the Queen of Chair 2 - only a matter of trips before she is flying down Cornice - Shot with Canon 10D - 70-200, f/2.8L USM lens
2.14.04 - Instead of the usual Valentine Day lovey dovey stuff, Dayna organized a trip to Point Lobos. Was a cloudy day in the beginning, but the day cleared up (which was good, since we all got soaked from standing a bit too close to the waters edge). We hiked along the shores of Point Lobos with Lance/Jenn and Lowe/Doreen - No whales :( - Shot with Canon 10D and 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens
3.7.04 - Our Last Day out in Arizona (out here for Shawn and Alley's wedding), we had to get out to do some hiking. We found ourselves traveling bout 2hours North of Phoenix to Sedona, Arizona. Known for its vast red rock formations, we were quick to grab the camera, some water, and head into the hills. On the way we stopped at Montezuma Castle, a cliff dwelling for the prehistoric Sinagua indians that inhabited the area some 600 years ago - now inhabited and frequented by us tourists and elderly Park rangers. (http://www.nps.gov/moca/). (Shot with Canon 10D, 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8L USM lens)
4.3.04 - Our First Trip to the California Palace Legion of Honor in San Francisco (http://www.thinker.org/legion/) On special exhibit was a history of the Art Deco time period. Complete with a 1937 Cord Phaeton. Built to commemorate Californian soldiers who died in World War I, the Legion of Honor is a beautiful Beaux-arts building located in San Francisco's Lincoln Park. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Bridge and all of San Francisco, the Legion is most noted for its breathtaking setting. Its collections include Rodin's Thinker, which sits in the museum's Court of Honor, European decorative arts and paintings, Ancient art, and one of the largest collections of prints and drawings in the country. The Legion of Honor is a three-quarter-scale adaptation of the 18th-century Palais de la Légion d’Honneur in Paris. (Shot with Canon 10D, 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens)
4.4.04 - Group bike ride around Angel Island, that big chunk of land located out in the San Francisco bay (http://www.angelisland.org/) - Our largest group yet (Garrison, Dayna, Lance, Jenn, Lowe, Doreen, Travis, Helen, Gil, Sylvia, Will, Mary, Susan and Vinny) - Despite super accurate weatherman predictions of 70 degree weather, it was was a chilly overcast day; however, the lack of sun did not cloud out the spirits of these riders. The big ball of warmth did make an appearance toward the end of the day - so all was not lost. We were supposed to also have Karen and Dowdy, but for separate reasons, they missed the Ferry launch - Til next time!!! (Shot with Canon 10D, 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens)
4.11.04 - With Dale in town, we decided to take a group outing tourist style - and good friends were in tow. Along with myself, Dayna, Susan and Dale, Lance, Brian and Doreen joined us. With the City heavy in deep fog, we headed up to the Golden Gate Bridge outlook on the North side of the Golden Gate Bridge for some views of the city. Luckily we were able to get above the fog level for some great typical San Francisco Spring pictures. (Shot with Canon 10D, 24-70, 702-00 f/2.8L USM, and Sigma 15mm Fisheye lenses)
4.11.04 - After leaving the Golden Gate Bridge, we headed down Highway 1 to Muir Woods National Park (http://www.nps.gov/muwo/). After finishing up with some parking problems, we took off on a short hike through the majestic Red Woods. Quite crowed along the paths, we decided to take the high vista point hike that still only got us about half way up these giant Sequoias (Shot with Canon 10D, 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8L USM lens)
4.4.04 - With the heavy fog continuing to roll in over the mountains, we continued along Highway 1 to Point Reyes National Park (http://www.nps.gov/pore/). The Sun was packed behind some dense clouds and fog, but we managed to get to the seashore and walk along a rather secluded section of beach. Might require a revisit as the area is full of fantastic views - that is, we assumed it was full of fantastic views...we mostly just saw fog... :) (Shot with Canon 10D, 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens)
4.23.04 - Annual Westside Coed Volleyball tournament at Las Vegas, NV. Team "Quick Set" was comprised of: Garrison, Fanger, John, Chris, Vinny, Karen, Jodie, and Eva. Proved to be yet another great tournament and plenty of fun hanging out with the team and all our other friends there. We finished second over all, which is not bad considering the amount of sleep that was had and the amount of alcohol that was consumed (Mental note - never underestimate the power of a drink, until AFTER you are done with the entire drink). Some pictures from the tournament, Dayna and I cruising around Las Vegas, Interior of the Bellagio Gardens, and the Fountains at Caesar's Forum - (Shot with Canon 10D, 24-70 f/2.8L USM lens)
5.8.04 - To surprise Lowe on his 30th Bday, we took a group trip to Yosemite National Park (http://www.nps.gov/yose/). Most of us had not been there since the mid 1980's, so it was a great trip up to the woods. Lance, Doreen, Lowe, myself, Dayna, Liza, Will, and Vinny made the trek up. Our Cabin was within 9miles of Bridal Veil Falls, so a quick ride got us to the Yosemite Valley floor. We decided to take a hike up Yosemite Falls which took the better part of Saturday - bout a 6mile round trip hike. We stopped just short of the upper falls area, as it was getting dark - but the views were spectacular. (Shot with Canon 10D, primarily with the 17-40 f/4.0L USM lens)
6.12.04 - We were not about to abandon Scott and Judy on their own in Seattle, so we took a group trip up there to visit. Dayna, myself, Lowe, Doreen, Frank, Dowdy, Lance, and Jenn. Was a great trip with Scott and Judy showing us their new house and surroundings. After the 3.5hour delay in our flight out to Seattle, everything flowed perfectly. On Saturday, we tackled the Rattlesnake Ledge Trail Hike in Mt. Baker National Forest. On Sunday, took our time visiting Pike Place Market (famous for its fabulous outdoor market, and fish markets featuring a unique style of fish delivery). From there, we headed over to the Seattle Center - complete with a spectacular view of Seattle @ 730 feet above sea level from the top of the Space Needle. Great trip with some great friends. (Shot with Canon 10D and 17-40 f/4.0L USM lens)
7.5.04 - With the new shark exhibit, it was just a matter of time for Dayna and I to head down to the Monterey Bay Aquarium (http://www.mbayaq.org/) in Monterey, California. Proved a great trip, as it is also the first time I got to bring the Canon10D along to try my hand at some marine life photography. New exhibit is pretty awesome, and you have got to make sure you check out the fantastic Jelly displays as well. Finished the day with a walk along the shores of Monterey and dinner at Phil's Market - Stuffed Artichokes - woohooo!!! (Shot with Canon 10D and 17-40 f/4.0L USM lens)
8.8.04 - With a free Sunday to lounge around (a rare lounge day), we chose to head to the SF Zoo (http://www.sfzoo.org/) - was kind of an overcast day, but still proved to be a good shoot. Every time we go, there is something new to see - either a different take on something that we have seen time and time again, or a completely new exhibit that we somehow managed to miss all the other times we have gone. (Shot with Canon 10D and 70-200 f/2.8L USM with Canon 2X converter)
8.18.04 - 8.23.04 - Wu Family Hawai'i Trip 2004 - This time the island of choice was Maui for family friend's, Willy and Debbie, wedding. Dayna and I took the opportunity to head on out with the family and enjoy the island from our temporary base at the Hyatt Hotel. Aunt Susan and Elizabeth came along as well. Was a wonderful, no planned trip on the island - from golfing the famed north course of Kaanapali, to South island beach hoping, to sipping Pina Coladas poolside, to snorkeling, we managed to fit everything in. Only sign of rain the entire trip was our last day when we ventured out to Nakalele Blowhole and Olivine Pools on the North shore of Maui. The beaches we visited (the ones that we could find) were Napili, Black Rock, and Kapalua on the north shore, and Palauea Beach and Makena (aka Oneola, aka Big Beach) on the south shore. Caught an excellent display of boogie boarder late into the evening at Makena Beach as well as the views of a spectacular sunset. Beautiful island indeed. (Shot with Canon 10D and 70-200 f/2.8L USM and 17-40 f/4.0L)
10.8.04 - To help celebrate the old man turning the (shhh, keep it down) "thirty corner," Scott, Judy, Vinny and Dayna joined me out in O'ahu. With Susan and Dale as our local-local tour guides in conjunction with Dayna our California based, Hawaiian tour guide, we had an absolute blast. From seeing a UH Wahine VB game, to scaling Diamond Head, to kayaking Lanikai (Can you believe those swimsuits those gals had? Oh wait, Dayna has one now - haha), to cough cough, seeing Germaine's Luau, to getting sand in places I did not know sand could get to at Waimea Bay , and of course, enjoying yet another Mac Salad based meal, it was the best way to share a great trip with some great friends. Thanks to all that made it out, and hope you're still not peeling!! "Vinny, look over there!! and over there!! and over there!!!" (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and everything in the bag)
10.19.04 - You have to leave it up to the Wu/Olender family - they sure know how to plan a wonderful vacation. (Thanks to Sean for setting everything up and providing a MORE THAN detailed account of the history of what we were embarking to see) This year, it was off to Athens, Greece, for the Wu Clan. Sophia, Debbie, Sean, myself, Mom and Dad braved the long flights to meet up in Athens on the 19th of October (yeahk, can you tell this October was rather busy for me? for those keeping count, I worked 6 days in October...). The bulk of the family went to Paris first, but I decided to just meet them in Athens. After touring ruin after ruin, and making the climb to the Acropolis, we definitely had our share of ancient Athens. Oh, and the food continually kept us filled to capacity at each meal. We then popped onto Aegean Air which shuttled us the 1/2hour flight out to the island of Santorini (http://www.santorini-info.net/). If you are looking for the National Geographic picture of sun bleached stark white homes with the blue domed churches, this is your heaven - and what a photographer's dream it was. The island is a mere 7x14 miles, so getting around was never an issue - was more of us constantly saying, "okay, where to next?" The town of Fira was the central hub of activity on the island. Imerovigli on the inside crescent side of Santorini contained perched along its steep cliffs some of the most beautiful hotels I have ever seen (and on my last night, decided to stay there for that very reason). The northern port town of Oia with its world renowned sunset was a draw for photographers and island people alike. After a short three night stay, we boarded the Ferry that would take us to our next destination, the island of Naxos (http://www.gonaxos.com/). Much different (and larger) than Santorini, the island proved to be a great destination as well for the sights and foods were absolutely wonderful (even the Mexican restaurant - hey, we did eat at the Chinese restaurant in Santorini). Oh, and we visited a brew house for the locally brewed alcohol of Greece, Ouzu (yuk) and Kitron (woohoo). Highlights of Naxos were the Temple of Demetra located inland on the island of Naxos; the Portara, the never completed temple of Apollo that acts as the gateway into the island, and the laid back, unbusy atmosphere of the Naxons. Since we were here in October, on the tail end of the tourist season for Greece, we were pretty much treated to the best the islands had to offer, and without the usual crowds that packs these areas during high season. Just beautiful and a must visit again destination (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 24-70 f/2.8L, 17-40 f/4.0L and 70-200 f/2.8L USM) |

11.6.04 - Taking advantage of a no-plan day (they are rare), Dayna and I headed up to have Sunday breakfast (alas, at 1pm in the afternoon) in San Francisco and then took the dogs on a hike through the Coastal Trail. Finding a spot along the shore, we let the dogs loose for some fun in the surf and rocks - Kaylani's first time at the beach. Proved to be a great location where we stopped as there were few if any people around, and the waves were crashing the rocks as the sun set into the clouds. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L and 70-200 f/2.8L USM)
11.26.04 - We were up in Santa Rosa, California, visiting family and decided to take a side trip with Dayna to the Charles Schulz museum (http://www.charlesmschulzmuseum.org/). With the help of Elizabeth and Ed, we found our way. Complete with works from 1950, the Peanuts Debut, to 1999, when Charles announced his retirement, the museum is a great album of one of America's heralded cartoonists. No Camera work allowed inside the museum, so we grabbed these shots out in the lobby. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM)
11.28.04 - With the 2004 annual zoo pass coming to a close, we decided to spend an afternoon with the animals. (http://www.sfzoo.org/) And just goes to show ya, every time you find yourself at the zoo, you are sure to stumble onto something new. This time we got an opportunity to take a tour of the small animal clinic in the Children's Zoo area - Got to see an armadillo for the first time (As well as some really big and fat Chinchillas - Yoshi and Chibi have a way to go!!) - We of course renewed our Zoo membership, so are sure to have more visits this coming year. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and Canon 200 F/1.8L USM)
12.4.04 - The Happiest Place on Earth - nope, not backstage at the Miss Hawaiian Tropic pageant, its DISNEYLAND. Headed down for a group trip to the Land of Mickey with Lowe, Doreen, Dayna, Lance, Dowdy, Vinny, Frank, and Kelly. Christmas was in the air, and holiday decorations were all around as we cruised around the park for the day. Proved to be an excellent time to go as the lines for the rides were no more than 1/2hr long at their worst. Going with good friends, instantly makes for some good times. We won't mention the Splash Mountain Censorship of our picture, not once, but yes, twice. Oh, and having Kelly hammer home the Disney spirit with that family at the restaurant, hey, you can't buy memories that good. Dowdy and Frank, thanks for putting on a good show at the Teacups..."It's a small small worrrlllldddd" (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 24-70-200 f/2.8L USM)
1.15.05 - Yup, you guessed it, back to the SF Zoo...hey, we're suckers for animals, what can we say. This time, we were accompanied by Debbie and Sophia. The Zoo continues to provide a wonderful location for getting close to the animals and each time we go, its different. this time, the lion cubs were close to the side viewing area, so many a shutters were spent on the glass. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 200 f/1.8L USM)
3.17.05 - The union of Kari and Shawn Robinson drew us to the Big Island of Hawai'i to pay witness to some spectacular events and sights. Thanks to Kari and Shawn for allowing us the opportunity to share in your special day. Bob, Elena, myself, Dayna, Scott, and Judy all took up temporary (although we would not mind a permanent stay) residence at the Mauni Lani Terrace resort for the week to take in all the sights, sounds, and tastes that the Big Island has to offer. From Alan Wong's restaurant at the Hualalai, to Dayna's home cooked meal one night, to my burning the chicken on the Super Grill out back, to the dinner feast at the wedding, and the tackling of the Jug of Kalua Pig from Costco, we sure ate our fill. Throw in horseback riding with Jay through the Waipio ridge, sunbathing on the shores of Anaehoomalu bay with the turtles, Hiking out to the active Lava flows of Kilauea ("Red Hot Maaaggmma"), to exploring and playing "SIMS tide pools" with the Hermit Crabs at the Place of Refuge, to playing some sand vball at the Hard Rock at Kona with the other Calif crew, and finally just laughing and hanging out with some great housemates and friends (yes, 2hours in a luke warm hot tub can be fun) the trip was an absolute blast. Oh, and rental Van from hell, notwithstanding (PS, you just KNEW it was going to work when we returned it...hahaha. Oh, Look SHEEP!!!). Shout out to our Boston Rep, Bob, for taking all that Judy (and Elena) could dish out and for being half the team that carted us all over that darn place - And another nod to our official translators, Dayna and Elena. ("Chopper goes down! chopper goes down!!")... Mahalo, y'all !!! (Shot with just about everything that can fit as carry on - Canon 1D MarkII).
4.3.05 - Doreen's Bday !! So asked what she wanted to do for her bday, the SF Zoo! So Dowdy, Lance, myself, Dayna, Lowe and Doreen headed up to the SF zoo. Was a great day, and as promised, something new every time we go - we got to see the tiny screech Owl out of its usual cage. The Day was sunny, but soon after we started heading out, and just in the nick of time, the rain came in hard and fast. First heading to the Beach Chalet for some drinks and to meet up with Liza, we then ventured off to Spinnaker's for dinner. And just as promised as well, the sun broke through, and provided us a great sunset view. Happy Birthday!!! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 70-200 f/2.8L USM)
4.16.05 -We just had to take advantage of the great weather and a free weekend, so we packed up the dogs, Jeff, and Lance and made a course due south to Monterey, California. First stop, the Monterey Bay Aquarium (http://www.mbayaq.org/). With the best accessibility to marine life and their awesome Kelp forest tank, the facility provides the best that a photographer could hope for when capturing marine life pictures and remain on completely dry land (just have to contend with the occasional FELLOW photographer jockeying for space - cough cough) Swimming with the fishies, and chilling with the jellies. After we headed out from the aquarium, Jeff headed back up north for a dinner engagement, and the remaining trio plus dogs continued south for a drive along famed 17-mile drive to see how the other half lives. And yes, they live well. Spectacular views and a setting sun were our destination, and we arrived just in time. With our own private beach out cove, we staked out our spot, watched the Dogs play (and get pounded) in the rushing surf (note the dogs are completely wet in their pictures) - Just another Great day in California...Oh, then we stuffed ourselves like clams at Phil's Seafood at Moss Landing....(Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 24-70 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L USM)
4.17.05 - Kay, the weekend just continues on. We were supposed to be home today cleaning the house, vacuum the floors...everything that we have been putting off til today. But then my sister called to say that she was heading to the SF Zoo with Sophia - How could we pass that up? We packed up the house, and bolted out the door to head up to SF. Must be an animal weekend for us!! Mostly walked around the zoo, but I could not resist the temptation to get the camera out of the bag. :) (.Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 70-200 f/2.8L USM)
5.14.05 - Headed up to San Francisco Zoo to meet Debbie, Sean, and Sophia. (Okay, so now you know, if you can't get a hold of us on the weekends, we're at the Zoo - hahaha) Day was slightly cloudy as the regular San Francisco Spring day settled into a brisk 65 degrees - but the sun poked through to provide for a great day at the zoo. (.Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 200 f/1.8L USM and Canon 2x)
6.11.05 - With a day to kill on a great weekend, we headed down to Half Moon Bay, California to the SeaHorse Ranch for some horseback riding. With the Fog sitting on top of the coast, Doreen, Dowdy, myself, and Dayna embarked on our ride. The fog lifted 30minutes into the ride just as the trail boss had predicted, and we were bathed in sunlight the rest of the trip. The trail took us down through the ranch, over a flowing stream, and off to the shores of Half Moon Bay. With limited experience on a horse, we went with a guide, but the 2hour trip guide proved to have a hands off approach to letting us ride where we wanted as well at our own pace (Although we'll all admit, you do have more of a secure feeling when someone close knows what to do if trouble arose even if he had limited English skills...hahaha) Emerald (Dowdy), Blackjack (dayna), Penny (gary) and Dakota (Doreen) proved to be great spirited horses and took great care of us throughout the ride. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 24-70 f/2.8L USM and a little help from the Ranch photographer armed with his Canon Rebel)
6.19.05 - With a day to kill on the weekend, Debbie called up to head to the SF Zoo for the afternoon. So we dragged Lance out of the house and headed up to the zoo to meet up with Debbie and Sophia - We then headed to dinner at Houston's afterwards to fill ourselves sick. To round out the day, ended up on the overlook of the Golden Gate Bridge to catch the last of the day, and watch the summer San Francisco Fog roll in (while freezing our asses off). (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 70-200 f/2.8L USM, Canon 17-40 f/4.0L USM)
7.5.05 - The end of the 4th of July weekend, and as Dayna and I were tied up all weekend with family dinners and such for the Wu/Liao family reunion in town this weekend, this day was pretty much the only day we could get away. Lance, myself, and Dayna headed down to Monterey for some kayaking in the bay. The weather was somewhat typical of Monterey, but the clouds kept the sun hidden for most of the trip. Wind started picking up making the trek back to shore a tired and dizzy trip (I think all three of us were glad to reach the beach) - We went as far out as the Aquarium so along the way we got to see some sea otters out in the bay Kelp forest area. I got so caught up grabbing pictures of the otters, we forgot to ask them if they would take any of us! (Shot with Canon 10d 70-200 f/2.8L USM)
7.15.05 - Well, it's been a year since Mike and Melanie moved up to the Pacific Northwest, and it was about time we visited them. Funny though, Melanie left in the same condition that we last saw her, pregnant! (As of this printing, they are currently expecting their second) The ever growing McCaffrey family provided awesome accommodations for Dayna and I. With Mia and her "oh, new toys to play with" look., Alpine's slobbery Frisbee play, and a great walking tour of both downtown and hiking trails of Portland, we had a great time and sure to return to our favorite Oregano's abode...Hmmm, maybe during Melanie's THIRD daughter? (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII 24-70 f/2.8L USM)
7.30.05 - Deciding to sleep in rather than take the trek up to Placerville for the 2005 Tubing trip, Dayna and I took out the Mountain Bikes (courtesy of Cynthia for the bike rental) and decided to head up to San Francisco. We started at Pier 1 in San Francisco and biked down the Embarcadero, through Fisherman's Warf, down through the Marina Area, through and past Crissy Field, on up to and across the Golden Gate Bridge, and finally, down into Sausalito. Making better time than we had planned, we had a couple of hours to kill before catching the Ferry back to Pier 1 (what, you think we were about to BIKE BACK through all the above??...hell no) we ate some lunch, cruised the downtown area, and took in the sights. While in Sasalito, we found Bill Dan (http://rock-on-rock-on.com/) - a Bay Area artist famous for his rock balancing sculptures. Weather was perfect for a great day out ... (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM)
8.12.05 - Taking advantage of a last minute trip, Dayna and I headed up to Seattle, Washington, to hang out with Scott and Judy NakaBerg. From our first steps off the plane we were treated to 5star accommodations throughout our stay including personalized chauffeured Mini services and cheese/potato chip tasting. Saturday started off with a great Hawaiian lunch at Kona Kitchen in Seattle (restaurant of Actor, Yuji Okomoto from Karate Kid), then we headed up to Anacortes to catch our Whale watching ferry. Traveling out into the San Juan Islands area with Captain Hamid at the wheel, we eventually caught up with the Killer Whales of K pod and L pod in the Strait of Juan de Fuca as they were heading out toward Vancouver. Was definitely a great sight, although we could not get very close as they were swimming at a pretty fast pace. We did manage to see some breeching from them as well as get one close pass from one of the Pod members (as evident in my ONE picture of an Orca - haha). On the way back, we encountered Freddy the resident Gray Whale which provided a great close encounter. Sunday we ventured out into downtown Seattle checking out Kerry Park and of course, Pike Place where we got some Dungeness Crabs and Alaskan King Crab legs to take back home with us. Great weekend trip with some great friends up in the Pacific Northwest. Great 50% rate at Bada Lounge for appetizers, by the way...hahaha (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L and 70-200 f/2.8L USM) |

9.5.05 - With Memorial weekend coming to a close, Dayna and I headed out with Sierra and Kaylani to Montara Beach in Half Moon Bay, California (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=532). The beach provided a great spot to play with the dogs, get some sun, and lounge in the surf (albeit, FREEZING cold surf). Day started to get a bit chilly toward the end of the day, so we packed up our things and headed out, but not without catching the sunset over by the Point Montara Light House (http://www.rudyalicelighthouse.net/CalLts/PtMntara/PtMntara.htm). Lessons learned, one, dogs don't really dig the ocean that much, but love running on the sand, and two, Dayna can throw a Jr. football like no one's business...hahaha (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and Canon 17-40 f/4.0L and Canon 200 f/1.8L USM)
10.7.05 - With the leaves turning color, Halloween on the horizon, and the
days getting darker, yup, only means one thing, October has reared its UGLY head again
- and that means another year has gone by....Yup, that's right, your
personal travel guide here, Garrison, turned Twenty Eleven....Okay, okay,
before everyone sends their condolences and asks what rest home I am
checking into, I decided a better way to celebrate was to gather up a group of
friends and head out to the islands of Hawai'i.
Trip stared with a flight from San Jose, California, to our first stop, the
island of O'ahu. With a total of 11 people on the trip, we transcended
the usual hotel room option and went for luxury - no holds barred. Number 2 Lumahai Street on the
cliffs under Koko Head was our home away from home for the first five days
of the trip. Room for 11, Nothing between us and the Pacific except
some rocks and sand, balconies on every floor, Pool (that WAS cleaner when we first
got there...ahem, Jeff), elevator, gated
entry, awesome kitchen, and heck, an ice maker!! - We did it, we found our own 7,000 square
feet of paradise within paradise. Zippy's, Alan Wong's, Kahala Madarin, Waiola Shave
Ice, Costco Kalua Pig, 2lbs of bacon, and copious amounts of Mac Salad were
our staple during our stay, and nothing was going to stir us away from it -
Our
collective cholesterol numbers are still at very alarming levels...
O'ahu was awesome - From Vinny's cranial
no hands collision with a rock, to Frank's Baywatch reenactment, to Jeff
using a pool table in a way no one intended, we had our fill of O'ahu and
packed up for our flight out to the island of Kaua'i for the next stage of our trip.
Firmly planted in another kick ass house, #222 at the Poi'pu Regency Resort, on
the south shore of Kaua'i, we ventured out to the many beaches (sun, hot, rain, sun, hot,
rain), took a trip to Princeville
and chatted up with the locals at Hamura Saimin (Did I just hear a Record
scratch??). Problem with these trips, is, the more we venture out to
Hawai'i, the harder it is to come back....A Huge Mahalo goes out to my
most excellent travel companions, Vinny NumNums, Frank Life buoy, Scott Favre Nakaberg, Judy Mid-seat driver NakaBerg (DODGE CREW -
HooRah!!), Brian Beach Bum, Doreen Look I got a Tan, Kari Head-lock, Shawn Road Sign Interception pass, Jeff Show us Gay Liao, and of course my
favorite Local tour guide, Dayna love of my life "Hey brah, wha hapin down
der" Cho...and for those concerned, the football made it back home in one
piece and is recovering nicely. One baseball, however, should be well
on its way to Fiji by now. Go StrongBAD!!! Jeff, one last thing,
the girl from Cinnamon Girl is totally bummed still...(Shot with Canon 1D
MarkII and Canon 70-200 f/2.8L USM and 17-40
f/4.0L USM and Canon S70) Also check out the Trip highlights page |

10.23.05 - Just DYING to get my new lens out into the field for some shots, Dayna and I took the morning to clean up around the Wu/Cho Homestead, and then decided for a Sunday Field Trip - So we headed out to the SF Zoo (where we are members) for a visit. Fog was starting to roll in, but the 300 2.8 was sure not to disappoint. Man, I LOVE this lens...Ran into a fellow Canon shooter who upstaged me by mounting his 400mm 2.8 and walking around by us - ah, the bitter sting of L Glass Envy :) (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and Canon 300 f/2.8L USM)
10.30.05 - Happy Birthday to her, Happy Birthday to her, Happy Birthday to Daaaayyynnaaa, Happy Birthday to her!! The Dogs and I decided to conspire together and grab Dayna from work early, and head due south in our rented Prius to our destination, the uber-resort, Bacara Resort and Spa (http://www.bacararesort.com) just north of Santa Barbara. Weekend was kicked off in high gear with the Avocado fest going on at the Bacara. Top chefs from the Bacara, surrounding resorts and downtown restaurants were on hand to flaunt their top creations with Avocado as the focal ingredient. The Avocado Tartar Brulee of Bacara Chef Andrew and the Avocado topped Hamachi offerings of (got to look up the name) were the top rated courses by myself and Dayna (the on hand experts) Saturday we hit up the Bacara Spa for a workout before heading out to play some tennis on the clay courts, took a tour with Bacara Executive Chef David Reardon of the private Bacara Ranch, which supplies all the fresh vegetables (during good seasons, produces 3million lbs of Avocados!! - that's a @#! load of avocados) and fruits for the resort. After some Ono grinds prepared by Chef Reardon, we figured that was enough for one day, and we needed some RnR. We decided to kick back and relax at the pool. You can tell the resort was top notch, Dayna and I never left the entire weekend!! Sunday's Bistro's breakfast brunch was excellent as was the 3pm late checkout time (and we totally forgot bout the hour time change, so bonus for us!) :)- After breakfast, we got to talk to the Resort Falcon expert and met the two resident pest controllers (used to keep undesirable birds away). Dayna and I even got to hold one of the birds of Prey. And check out our "Rock Balancing art" that we setup on the beach. Our second floor room, 11202, was absolutely beautiful complete with a deep soak tub, great village view, large lanai perfect for the dogs, and fire place. Bacara definitely made our list of top resort destinations, just watch out, you won't want to go anywhere else!! Dayna unfortunately celebrated her birthday by coming down with a cold on Sunday, but I think we managed to have an absolutely Excellent time before the sniffles took over. Technical note, Prius consumed 12 gallons total for the round trip....go Prius!! Happy Birthday, Hun - no one would believe you're only 23, cough cough. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40L f/4.0L USM)
11.20.05 - With a Day to kill in the balmy 70 degree weather of San Diego's Fall season, Dayna and I headed to the Wild Animal Park located in the neighboring San Pasqual Valley (http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wap/index.html). The park, a mere 10minute drive from our hotel, turned into an hour long drive on the back of my poor navigation skills; however, I want to stress, that is not the focus of this trip report. The important part here is that we did eventually get here. :) - who knew that 1800-acres could be so well hidden? And hey, it can be said that without our meandering journey beforehand, we never would have arrived at the cheetah feeding at the perfect moment. Apparently they are still getting used to their enclosure, and were not very visible in the prior days. See everything happens for a reason!! We were told Lions and Tigers were off in their vast enclosures, and true to their nature, they are very well camouflaged - as there were none in sight. We did have close encounters with the giraffe as well as the cheetahs - so the day was well spent. The Tram was a great break from the walking and took us on a full trip along the perimeter of the park (don't forget the photo safari, can be booked right at the Guest services office!!! - inside joke). Go Chargers! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 300L f/2.8L USM)
12.3.05 - Tiki Room, Jungle Cruise, Splash Mountain, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Peter Pan...Nope, I'm not talking about some gay bars, I'm talking about DISNEYLAND!!! Dayna and I took the Wu-patented Ironman Saturday AM flight down to Orange County, shotgun the park, stay down at Disneyland Hotel, and then Return Sunday night Disney Trip - and we had a blast. We managed to cruise on 13 rides throughout the park and also catch Fantasmic at night. Want to see what happens when a kazillion people all try to go different ways all at once? Arrange for a huge firework spectacular, wait for everyone to setup to watch the show (I'm talking Mainstreet Shoulder to Shoulder!!), and then CANCEL it....fun fun fun. We were cunning Disneyaniacs tho, and managed to successfully navigate the angry mob and crazy stroller drivers with only one Disney traffic guard yelling at us in our wake. Hey, we were on a mission, and nothing stands in front of us and the Jungle Cruise Ride (Tigers are known to jump 30feet...don't worry, we're only about 10 feet away, so he should sail right over us - hahaha) We definitely had the Fast Track pass during our stay and kudos to Dayna for keeping up as well as kicking my sorry ass at Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin (click the pic on the rigth)!! "Check it out, his eyes light up...hahaha" (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40L USM) |

2.04.06 - Looking for a weekend day get away (aka, escape the Intel Laptop day), Dayna and I decided to head down to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for our first 2006 visit. (http://www.mbayaq.org/). Was a great day down in the Bay giving us a chance to check out the recent changes to the outer slough exhibit. The Jelly exhibit always comes through in the beauty factor and never fails to disappoint. A dinner down at Phil's Fish market capped a great trip down. (and, yes, the irony is not lost on us - going for a trip down to check out the aquarium and then go for seafood, hey, what can you say, we're nature lovers). (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM)
2.13.06 - Okay, the season passes need to be used...so on a whim, booked a cabin (snow lingo for a one bedroom condo) at Kirkwood for a weekend trip for Dayna and I. Bookin the trip on Friday, and heading up the same day, definitely ranks up there as one of the least planned trips this year for us. Sierra and Kaylani were the smuggled guests as well (no dog policy is quite flexible when the dogs are less than 20lbs - haha). With our room, errr, cabin, overlooking Kirkwood Meadow, we had a great base camp for the weekend - one phonebook was the only casualty as it was sacrificed in the name of the wood fireplace. Well, it proved to be a great weekend to go as the weather was reaching up into the high 40's, the sun was out, the wind was nonexistent, the snow was still good, and the crowds were low. Just in case we had any doubt, we definitely found out how out of shape Dayna and I are for winter sports as we boarded for bout 3/4 day on Saturday and were then utterly slammed with sore muscles, dehydration, and a good case of the "stay in and watch a movie over Cup O noodles." But with Spring Skiing in the middle of February, we were all smiles. Sunday was another gorgeous day as I ventured out for early runs granting myself private lift chair rides on the backside for most of the morning. The Afternoon was filled with photo shots from around the slopes with Dayna. Awesome weekend... (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM)
2.26.06 - ROAD TRIP!!! Jeff convinced us to drive down to LA with him to hit Disneyland and Universal Studios for the weekend. Man, we musta had NOTHING at all to do....Departing Friday night for the long trek down to LA, Dayna, Jeff, and I stayed at the Ramada Anaheim for a short walk down to the Main gate. Was a blast hitting up Disneyland and with Jeff along, we hit pretty much every ride, from Buzz Lightyear to Thunder Mountain, to Splash Mountain - was a Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah day. On Sunday, on the way out, we met up with Melisa at Universal Studios. Have not been there in a while, so it was pretty fun - the Jurassic Park ride just kicks ass...Good thing we got a season pass, and then proceeded to never use it again - hahaha - good times with good company. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM and Canon SD30)
6.24.06 - 7.6.06 Ya know, I don't even remember how this trip came together, but it was a whirl wind of good times - Fanger, Silvia, Vinny, Jeff and myself took off for a trip through China - and what a trip it was. Hey, Jeff as the only Chinese speaker amongst us, and acting tour guide / translator, how could we go wrong, right? Okay, joking aside, he did great under all the stress! San Francisco to Los Angeles to Tokyo to Shanghai - count em up, that's 15hours of flying time. First mistake, don't head out around the world with plans for someone to pick you up without making sure a) they are going to pick you up, and b) that you have a local contact information on them. Highlights from the trip included a ride on Shanghai's Maglev (magnetic levitation) train (top speed of ~267mph), Vinny finding a liking to Chinese flight attendants, hiking around the world famous Huangshan Mountains (think stair master, but for 8 hours worth of hiking, oh, and hike it in the rain too), finding out that yes, westerners get laughed at when fanning flies from their lunch ("umm, where did that chicken that we saw a minute ago, go?"), almost getting stranded in Huangshan when I lost my passport and ID (Thanks for the find, Silvia!!!), trying to figure out how Silvia can hike so fast (with a cane too!), watching Jeff get hives from alcohol poisoning (we all went big), taking the overnight express train from Shanghai to Beijing, meeting up with Dave and Crystal in Beijing to do some shopping (I just love my China fighter helmet), getting the famous (notice have everything in China is considered world famous?) roast duck from Qianmen Quanjude Rost Duck Restaurant in Beijing, taking in the Forbidden City, hiking the Great Wall, standing in Tiananmen Square, finding out that Jeff does not know the Chinese word for Toilet Paper, also finding out that "Wo da card bu work" is not typical Chinese but it does get the point across, seeing what happens when we get into a minor car accident in Beijing (SORRY DAVE!), finding out that an American passport won't necessarily get you a dance partner at a club, getting food poisoning from (it was our fault really for trying to eat at a western style breakfast place anyways - who does that? and before a train trip too!), and getting a personalized tour around Shanghai from Jeff's Mom for some, what else, cheap Rolex's and Made in China stuff ... (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM, 70-200 f/2.8L USM)
1.20.07 - Dayna and I took a lazy weekend, and decided to take a trip up to visit our friends at the San Francisco Zoo. This trip I was pretty fascinated with the cats, so pretty much that's all we covered, but even with the somewhat cloudy day, the sun started to break through and make for some really nice lighting for our feline friends. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and Canon 300 f/2.8L USM) |

2.20.07 - As a surprise, Dayna planned a trip for us to go to the islands of Lana'i and O'ahu. My first time on Lana'i, and what a beautiful place. There are not too many things to do on the island, so its really about connecting with the company that you keep. Lana'i is the sixth-largest of the islands, or said another way, the 3rd smallest. And you definitely get that feel when you touch down. After a Hawaiian bumpy ride from Oahu you get a feel for how really small the island is. Lanai City is the only real town settlement on the island, and the central location for everything. Car rentals? Good luck as the only one in town is also the town gas station and repair shop dishing out Jeeps for rent for $200/day. We chose to take a private tour arranged through our resort, (http://www.fourseasons.com/lanai/) and had a blast with our guide, Mike - His stories of being chased around his truck by a wild turkey to running from cane fields after the sight of a Cane spider kept us entertained for the entire day. And this guy was 6'2 250lbs! After Lana'i we headed back to O'ahu where we did our usual Dole stop to get our fill of Dole Whips, and then managed to find the Turtle beach on the north shore. What a great encounter experience to finally see these guys bathing on the beach. Great Fun Aloha trip, thanks Hun! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and Canon 17-40 f/4.0L and Canon 200 f/2.8L) |

6.24.07 - Back up at the San Francisco Zoo, what I love about our pass is that we can head into the zoo, just check out a couple of animals then we are off to grab some food. This time we checked out the Birds and African exhibit - the giraffe's were close by their outdoor feeding area, so the 300 proved good reach to get those headshots (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and Canon 300 f/2.8L USM) |
||
10.12.07 - Las Vegas!!! As a Happy Birthday to me surprise, Dayna took me to Las Vegas for my birthday! To start off, Dayna booked this super awesome Caesar's suite for us to celebrate at, the walk through shower that connects the His and Her's baths was unreal. But not to just make this any ordinary trip, we also made it a culinary exploration of two top restaurants on the strip - the ever celebrated Guy Savoy (Guy Sovoy) at Caesar's for dinner (siigghh, Hung from Top Chef, never came out of the kitchen to say "Hi") and Thomas Keller's Bouchon (Bouchon) at Paris for breakfast - Was the trip extravagant? Hey it's Vegas! Was the trip expensive? The $70 soup at Guy Savoy easily answers that - they have a bread somonier! But was the trip amazing? But of course, as my wonderful girlfriend continues to go to such great lengths to make sure my bdays are an absolute blast - Everything else that happened that weekend, well, what happens in Vegas, is staying there for sure and not documented here. "Snackus Maximus!!" (Shot with Canon SD30) |

10.15.07-10.20.07 - With my days with nvidia WorkstationQA coming to a close (and my 2 month self induced sabbatical about to start as well), it was finally time for me to hand over my tenure as manager, and in doing so, head out to Pune, India, to ready the team there as well. I will be the first to say that I was reluctant to go to India in the past, but taking my partner in NV crime, Sean, with me, we headed off for what would be quite an adventure. Meeting with the team was part of the trip, the entire cultural part was another - and it was a blast. I have to say, we owe a good portion of it to our good friend, Jeetendra, who in our office in Pune, proved to be quite the tour guide and go-to guy if we had any requests or questions. After a long long series of flights from San Francisco (our first exposure to India-type of crowds was at the airport at SFO - we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into, but this was a good introduction), to Newark, and eventually to Mumbai, we were picked up by our driver (if you are going to travel to a 3rd world country, going on the company is the way to go) and driven down to Pune, India. Hot, dry, dusty, crowded - and this was at 8pm at night. Our hotel in Pune, Le Meridien (Le Meridien), was awesome, and had all the conforms of home, okay, as close to home as you could get when you stay at a place that bomb checks your car every time you arrive. Jeetendra as both our work and social tour guide, took us everywhere from open markets to get our India threads (Kurta for myself, and as we tried to find a nice Sari for Dayna, finally settled on a traditional Indian Dress) to bring back home to dinner arrangements at local restaurants. Up and Above is where it's at, hey, you ever seen a trampoline at a restaurant - Just ask Sean...I rest my case. That, and the Kingfisher was pouring like it was going out of style. The Cricket game that we had with the team was a first for Sean and myself, and hey, not to brag, but a couple Half Century at bats is a matter of pride for myself - Sean was quite the bowler of the group as well. Way to bring some good ol American kickass to India...:) We had a blast enough that Sean and I picked up some cricket gear before we headed back to the states too - and turns out the shop owner has family in Cupertino, go figure! Before leaving Pune, Sean and I took a walk through the streets and found a small village that we took a stroll through. Ever picture a National Geographic photographer getting swarmed by villagers, that was it. It was a bit overwhelming to be around so many people, but they were all very gracious and inviting - it was one of the best times we had really. I learned a couple of things for sure in India, "Papaaddddddssssssssssssss" is totally fine as a pronunciation of Papads, a guy in a side marketing making "Hot Chips" in a steel drum filled with oil can beat our Lay's any day, travel with a way open mind as you never know what to expect, and never never get into the back of a speeding car through the streets of Pune while heavily drunk - the ride can only be described as hell, and the next day is murder. What to say about India - we had a blast really...and with some really beautiful people, culture, and exciting atmosphere (and new friends), well, pour me another Kingfisher. Heading back home, we took a flight rom Pune to Mumbai instead of taking a car ride, and stayed a short <8hr stay at the Hyatt Regency Mumbai (Hyatt Mumbai) before out hop skip back to the US. Thanks for the trip, India, you really did open my eyes... (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM, 70-200 f/2.8L USM, Canon SD30)
10.31.07 - 11.7.07 - Someone's Birthday!!!!! This one was extra special....for a number of reasons. Let's start at the beginning - Dayna's bday, and we were heading out of town was all I would say. She even asked the night before whether she should pack like we were going to Hawai'i? How right on she was. I even had my Mom run a smoke screen the previous night and got Dayna to think that we were going to Santa Barbara, nope....it was off to the Big Island. And of course it being Halloween, Dayna and I just had to fly in costumes, which was fitting for the trip, since Dayna and I went as fighter pilots this year (complete with flight suits that we got from the military surplus store) - We definitely got a few interesting looks for sure. After stopping off in O'ahu and having a quick lunch with Dayna's Mom, we were back at the airport to catch our connector to the Big Island. The next surprise was about to be revealed. I had arranged for Susan and Dale to join us for dinner on the Big Island, okay, yes, and to help out with locking in our Kama'aina rate at the Four Seasons. So after they snuck on the flight and sat behind us during boarding, they surprised Dayna half way through the trip - I don't think people appreciate having someone yell in shock on a flight like that, but eh, it was a short flight. After Susan and Dale returned home to O'ahu after having dinner with us, we were on our own for the rest of the week. I just love the Big Island....What didn't we do? Countless meals at Pine Tree Cafe, an evening snorkel trip to swim with 15' wing span Manta Rays (amazing, amazing), some hikes out to some fairly remote beaches that we never did before (Black Sand, White Sand, even Green Sand, the Big Island has it all!!), saw plenty of turtles out on the beaches, and ohhh, what else, oh yeah, the whole engagement thing... :) Toward the end of our stay, we were walking around the resort grounds after getting back from dinner, and found the perfect spot. So there, under the lights of the Beach Tree, I asked Dayna to close her eyes, I dropped down to a knee, and asked my wonderful girlfriend to be my wife. A couple of jumps and screams later, voila, we're engaged!! It was a wonderful moment unequalled in anything in my life, and definitely one that will live on in my memory forever. Funny that Dayna never looked in my lens case that was in the safe the entire trip! Thanks to all that helped to keep Dayna in the dark, and helped me pull this surprise off (Minou her Boss at Yahoo for working with me to get Dayna time off, to Susan and Dale for helping out with Kama'aina as well as being a huge surprise, and to John Atencio for just making an amazing ring). She really had no clue about it at all as the bday trip to the Big Island was the perfect cover for my engagement surprise...We'll be back very soon, as I don't see us getting married anywhere else! For a look into the ring process, check out Dayna's Ring Page (First link Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM, 70-200 f/2.8L USM, second link is with Canon SD30)
12.6-07 - 12.13.07 Tanzania Africa - This one was amazing. It all started with an email off to Dawn Anderson at African Dream Safaris (http://www.africadreamsafaris.com) on Nov 17th asking for some information - and by November 23rd we were booked - it was that crazy. First of all, have to say that on any future trip, or anyone looking for a recommendation, ADS, is the ONLY safari company I would even consider, hands down. Sean, myself, and Dayna decided to take the financial jump and make the trip happen, and it was beyond every expectation that I could possibly have imaged for the trip. The three of us had a trip beyond belief, and was glad that we went together as the memories are forever. Our driver Wilfred was an excellent guide and was with us the entire trip from the minute we landed in the Serengeti (check out the pics of our plane!!) to the very last day we were to depart back home. "Asante Sana, Wilfred!" Absolutely, every day was more amazing then the next as we traveled via our truck and guide through the Senengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara. Observing Lion prides all day, tracking a Leopard in East Serengeti, walking a Maasai village, witnessing the start of the great migration, seeing the beauty of a cheetah in person and on her own terms, and meeting some absolutely proud and amazing people were just some of thing things that we got to do everyday of the trip - and what was best, it was all on our own terms for what we wanted to do each day. Photography wise, I was in a dream the entire trip. Our full trip itinerary here, so you can see where we were and where we stayed. We can't wait to be back, as TIA (This is Africa), and it is by far the most amazing place I have ever set foot on. I brought everything in the bag for this trip, including a new addition to the Wu-Gear Team just for this trip, and sure glad I did as the MarkII had shutter failure on Day 4!!! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and the new beast, the Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM, 70-200 f/2.8L USM, Canon 300mm f/2.8L and Canon SD30) |

2.10.08 - Quick trip up to the slopes for a day at Kirkwood - the day was perfect, with blue skies and warm weather, here's just some quick shots from the lift as we were too busy bombing down the mountain to take more shots this trip - Dayna continues to rock on her board!!! (Shot with Canon SD30) |

3.15.08 - With the Snow bug continuing to take control of us, we headed back up to Kirkwood for a weekend of riding. This time Jeff joined us up on the slopes, and good thing too, it was probably the best riding day in two years!!! We stayed slope side at the Mountain Club at Kirkwood, and just watched as the snow continued to dump all night on Friday night, and all morning on Saturday, so when we ventured out, it was pure pow heaven. Amazing, amazing day!! Day two was a bit breezy, but we were so killed from riding all day on Saturday that Dayna and I took a half day while the kid rested up with the dogs back at the condo (Shot with Canon SD30) |

4.06.08 - To help celebrate Doreen's birthday (April 3rd), Dayna and I took her up to Eagle Cafe in San Francisco (where we met up with Lance, Maggie and a friend of their's who was in town, Allison) for breakfast - What else, Corned Beef and Hash please!! Afterwards we parted with Lance and Maggie and took Doreen over to Alcatraz, where she's never been! It was a gorgeous day out in the bay, with bright blue skies and a good breeze off the ocean - Always fun roaming around with headsets on taking the self guided tour. Happy Birthday, Doreen!!! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM)
6.29.08 - San Francisco - Looking to take advantage of a beautiful day out, Dayna and I had high aspirations to head up to SF and bike across the Golden Gate Bridge - and we were going to make the day as Green as possible...So we biked over to the Sunnyvale CalTrain station and caught the train up to San Francisco. Once we got up there, we got a bit side tracked and never did end up getting across the Golden Gate Bridge as we got together with Sean over at Houston's instead, and well, the rest is history. Couple of beers later and some good conversation, we headed back to catch the train back down to Sunnyvale - Oh whoever took my Lambo Gallardo out of the garage, please put a cover on that girl, she gets chilly (Shot with Canon 1D MarkII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

7.6.08 - After Elena and Bob's wedding events were done (Bob and Elena) Dayna and I decided to do some wedding homework on our own and take a short trip over to the Big Island for two days to meet and talk with Jenna, our own wedding coordinator at the Four Seasons, Hualalai. After getting some final wedding details ironed out, we took some time out and enjoyed some of our favorite beaches on the Big Island (and got some great encounters with sunbathing sea turtles). The second day, we headed out to the Volcano National Park. On this particular day, the Halema`uma`u crater was spewing out a pretty good level of toxic gas so some parts of the park were closed - not that it deterred us from using our best judgment and hiking out past the end of Chain of Craters road (we did notice the lack of cars down there), and then proceeded way past the subsequent warning signs - Probably was not the best idea as we were hiking out pretty far only to then have the winds change and thus cause the billowing funnel of toxic gas that was previously going up into the air to now settle as a visible layer of gas between us and our car - luckily we turned back at the right time and was only slowing killing ourselves for a short walk. Okay, lesson learned, we heed the warnings better... :) (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

10.15.08 - 10.24.08 - Big Island Hawai'i - Yes, back to the Big Island of Hawai'i, but this time, once we landed on the island, it would forever be considered our LAST trip to Hawai'i as merely just a "really serious" dating couple. We got married!! What can I say about this trip - great friends and family around us for our big wedding day made it one that will always be beyond words. It was great to have family and friends come all the way out to this rock in the Pacific to help us celebrate. (Props to Jeff for making the trek all the way from China to lend his support - he better have, he was in the wedding party!). I can't really encompass the experience in just a quick paragraph here, so I'll just summarize with, "absolutely the best experience I have ever had" - and thanks to all for being there to share it with us. Once the wedding was done, bunch of friends stayed on the island to continue the festivities (don't worry, Dayna and I will get our real Honeymoon at some point). Shots range from pics of the dogs first trip to Hawai'i, snorkeling on the Big Island, lounging on the beach with the 1year olds and chugging beers, Vinny having his first photo shoot, two words, "DONKEY BALLS!," visiting the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau (pronounced: poo-oo-ho-noo-ah o hoe-now-now) aka, Place of Refuge, Volcano National Park (Was still venting the gases (see previous trip) so access to the flow was closed down again), and stopping off at Akaka Falls in Hilo. It was on this trip that we apparently DTR'd with Jeff as well...Who knew. Once we managed to kick everyone else off the island, and the last of the family and friends departed, Dayna and I did have one day on our own, so we shacked up at this place called the Hualalai Four Seasons, real dump, don't go there (trying to get the prices to fall) - Allooohhhaa. You can check out more info and pictures about the wedding at Dayna's website, (www.daynawu.com), that name has a nice ring to it, doesn't it... (First set Shot with Canon SD40 and second set with the trusty Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM, 70-200 f/2.8L) |

11.01.08 - Happy Birthday to Dayna! My WIFE! Our first trip to Disneyland in a while, and a first as husband and wife! We flew in this time on Friday from SFO (And yes, it does beat waking up at 5am on a Saturday to catch the early flight into Santa Ana) and stayed two nights at the Anabella - it never disappoints. Trip was tons of fun, with slightly overcast skies and a bit of rain that helped to keep the crowds down. You know I must love my wife as I let her sleep in til noon on Saturday before we headed into the park! Although Blue Bayou does not have Prime Rib on their menu anymore, siiiigghh, it still proved to be a filling dinner, and for the price for the food you get, its a better deal than $9 hot dogs (okay, we had that too). Running from one end of the park to the other, and kicking Dayna's married butt 5 out of 6 runs on Buzz Lightyear throughout the day, we had our fill - Although I do admit, we chickened out by not swing dancing at the Jump/Jive/Swing party - stage fright. Oh, and the trip back to the airport on the Super Shuttle was pretty entertaining as well..."Oh, man, this guy picked up the wrong people, and the ones he told to piss off were the right ones? Doh" - Oh, and another note, prob should skip evening runs on Splash Mountain in November - it got a tad chilly with wet pants on... (Shot with Canon SD40) |

11.22.08 - We headed up to San Francisco Zoo for the day. Given, I have shot there so much, I really didn't need to cover anything new, but of course, I am not complete if I find myself walking away nothing to process later. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 300mm f/2.8L USM) |
||
11.23.08 - Dayna and I headed up to the De Young Museum in San Francisco, CA (http://www.famsf.org/deyoung/). Initial intent was the newly opened Academy of Sciences, but Strike one, sold out. So not to waste a day up there, we headed across the park to the De Young's - beautiful museum with showings of African art, Oceanic Art, Americana of all sorts, and also an exhibit of the famed Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art - real famous I guess. We both loved the artist that used ammunition to create religion architecture - there's symbolism in a non subtle way. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |
||
11.29.08 - Okay, trip two to the Academy of Science. This time with Lance and Maggie. Oh wait you say, this is actually not the Academy of Science you say? Well, you got that right then. For those keeping count, yup, that's two weekends in a row that we struck out. Strike2, the museum was sold out AGAIN. So the intrepid group not to be deterred in our museum hunt, headed out over to the Legion of Honor Museum San Francisco, CA (http://www.famsf.org/legion/) - They serve beer there, so you can't really go wrong. And what better way to view famous works of art, then to capture them on digital film and take it with you. That's right, bucko, I now own a Picasso. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

2.21.09 - Snow was falling and Kathy was calling, so the three of us headed up to Kirkwood for the weekend. Was a fun weekend with a great sunny perfect day on Saturday. Could it get better? You bet your ass it could. Late on Saturday, the clouds started to come in, and from there on out, it was nonstop snowfall through Sunday. Dayna was a bit too tired to head out that day (yup, she's nuts), but Kathy and I could not be stopped. We hit the line right when Cornice opened up, so there we were, sitting on the summit of Kirkwood, about 3 feet of fresh untouched snow ahead of us, the snow patrol guy and the rescue dog (pictures #24 and #25) - amazing amazing finish to a great weekend (Shot with Canon SD40) |
||
2.28.09 - Safe the Tatas!!! We saw that sticker on a guy's snowboard while we were in the lift line. His comment, "yeah man, save them all!" - classic. Lance, Maggie, Dayna and I (oh, and yes, two dogs) rented a house at Northstar for the weekend. Was a good weekend with good friends on the slopes. However, it was after the trip that the real adventure started. Lanced headed out early as Dayna and I hung back to walk around Northstar Village before we left to do some shopping. As we were ready to head out (in the snow and rain, mind you, that had just started to fall) we came back to a completely flat tire on the ol 4Runner - Great. The lame part is that we moved the truck from the house we were renting to be closer to the village, and that's where we must of punctured the tire - sigh. After getting renewed AAA membership (needed a tow), then a tow down to Incline Village (only to find out the tire can't be repaired), then a drive on the spare tire through one of the heaviest snow storms I've ever tried to drive through down to Reno (only place around that has my size tire), and THEN a realization that the spare that we had on was indeed a full size snow tire - In other words, we went from Northstar to Incline Village to Reno, home. Off to American Tire... (Shot with Canon SD40) |

3.7.09 - Bocce anyone? Call out went out to our crew, and Vinny, Frank, Jae, Brad, Kevin, Celine, Dayna, Doreen, and Kari came out to take in some good ol fashion Bocce games at Campo Di Bocce in Los Gatos. (http://www.campodibocce.com/) Good Food, fun games, and of course constant supply of beers helped to make a great night of games. Dayna took home her first win over me with her impressive bowling finesse - I blame the loss on not having enough alcohol at the time. Keona in her ultra fly Puma suede outfit (courtesy Dayna and I, Christmas 2008) was equally impressive to be showing an interest so early, but then again, her French roots run deep with the French equivalent, pétanqu, being a big part of her cultural makeup. (Shot with the Canon SD40) |

3.21.09 - Snow storm predicted to come, which meant, we head up to Kirkwood. Given the bad luck we had the previous weekend, what could go wrong, right? We were sure to have a great time. Saturday was an overcast day, but good runs were to be had wherever you went. But it was the evening and the next day that proved to be the best of the season for sure. It started to snowfall late on Saturday, and continued well through the night. Dumping a couple of feet of fresh powder for those ready to hit the slopes the next day. It was absolutely crazy how much snow fell - enough that the backside never opened up due to conditions. Unfortunately for Dayna, we learned a good lesson off the bat - Don't ride down Snowkirk in heavy powder as it flattens out at the bottom - and if you don't have enough speed, well, it quickly turns a snowboard run into a hiking trail. Much bitching, and a couple of hours later, we finally got out of there and headed to the rest of the mountain to play in the snow. Riding that much powder definitely gets you tired, so we were done early, and decided to pack up and head out by noon. Everything was all fine and dandy on the drive, then, just shy of getting out of the mountains, yup, you guessed it, flat tire #2 this season. Where is our luck? Seriously, this is happening again? This time it seems that we actually went out of our way to get the flat! Due to the mass amount of snowfall when we headed out, 88 was closed down forcing us to head down to 50 to get out and that was where we were hit with the flat tire. So yes, we do have a full size spare, but unfortunately AAA did not have lug that would fit my rims - sigh, so yet again we get a tow truck ride. At least we got a free trip down the mountain courtesy of AAA . It's always an adventure for us for sure no matter where we go... (Shot with the Canon SD40) |

4.4.09 - Lance and Maggie nuptials coming up very soon, and the wedding planning is in high gear. Since Dayna and I missed out on our own cake tasting, Lance and Maggie invited us to join them at Wente Vineyards in Livermore (http://www.wentevineyards.com/), the site of the wedding, for theirs! How can you pass up great FREE cake? We got our fill, and think we settled on a winner before we headed over to have lunch there at The Restaurant - Yeah, its so high scale that they don't even need a full name for it, its literally called The Restaurant. But name aside, the Pork Chops, I can't believe Lance and Maggie are not going to offer the Pork Chop at the wedding....damn, Ono!! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

5.05.09-5.10.09 - Trip down to O'ahu with my lovely wife and, "shhhshhh," the little one (first trip to Hawai'i !!!). Started the trip right by hitting Zippy's right off the bat - awesome as usual. We stayed at Casa Peta which provided us perfect launch site for trips to the beach, Dole, and downtown. Got to spend some great time with family and friends on the island as well as break our own "big Baby news." As expected, everyone was overwhelmed with the news, and can't wait til December now. We got together with Karyle and crew at Ojisan (umm, beer and Wafu Steak, and laughs, yeah, count me down for that), hit up Aloha stadium for some shopping another day, crashed the Pineapple Room for lunch (man, Alan knows what's up), and met up with Susan and Dale for a couple of days as well. We thought we were being sly in holding back from Susan and Dale, only to find out they are expecting too! After being completely shocked on both sides, the ladies pulled the "we're preggers card, and decided to stay at the house while Dale and I headed up for a hike up Diamond Head - always a beautiful hike. We also got together later to check out the food fares at the KCC farmers Market . Nothing to say other than DEFINITELY GO HERE TO EAT! Great company, great time with family, and of course great food. Also a big part of this trip was immortalizing these big event changes in my life with getting some ink done. Blast artist of choice, Jesico over at Soul Signature (http://soulsignaturetattoo.com). He did some amazing work - He free hand sketched out of the Hawaiian Poly design and blasted for 4.5hrs. Definitely a great crew of guys and gal over there, and an experience that in more than just physical pain memory, will be with me always. And yes, it hurt like @#!%! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

5.16.09 - We finally made it. The San Francisco Academy of Science (http://www.calacademy.org/)!! After being turned away (yeah, who TURNS people away from a museum) due to consistent sold out days, Dayna and I and the lil one, yes, he's in there, got to spend the day at this absolutely awesome museum. You have to fight for parking, get in line early for shows, and pay big to feast on super over priced expensive food - BUT the trade off is seeing some truly amazing and well put together exhibits - The Rain forest and aquarium are definitely my favorites. Man, that Chinese Salamander is huge - at least that's what Dayna said...seriously, she did say that. (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

5.22.09-5.25.09 - On a last minute decision, decided to join Debbie and crew down in Santa Barbara for Memorial Day Weekend. They stayed at a house rental in Santa Barbara, and Dayna and I shacked up at our resort of choice, the Fess Parker - where four legged guests are able to join in the fun (http://www.fessparkersantabarbarahotel.com). It was an awesome trip down and was Baby (on the way) Wu's first SB trip. We biked around campus and took in the local fare (Freebird's still rocks). The weekend also coincided with the Santa Barbara I Madonnari festival complete with food vendors and their street painting festival (http://www.imadonnarifestival.com/). Dayna had to miss out on the festival as she was not feeling well (Baby Wu, you better take it easy in there and watch out, Mom is going to get you back!!!) Oh, and check out Sophia's tramp stamp - we could not be any prouder (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

6.21.09 - My First Father's Day! Okay, that is open to debate, but its closer to being a Fathers Day for me than ever in the past, so I am taking advantage of it. We met with the Wu Olender clans at Bella Saratoga for brunch, and then headed out for a stroll of Hakone Gardens, Saratoga, CA (http://www.hakone.com/) Always a good walk out there - have not been there since Donna's Wedding. :) Check out my recreation of "hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil" - (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

7.4.09 - Dayna surprised me with an evening stay at the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay for the sole reason of being a good husband. Hey, I really can't complain about that. She lined us up with a great ocean front 1 bedroom suite - plenty of room for us and the pups!!!! Since we did not get down to Half Moon bay til late on Friday night since we were running late at the RedBull MotoGP in Laguna, we ended up eating in the room with room service - but hell, its the Ritz, so it was fantastic. I have a great great wife! Although, I can't completely say that the dogs were as good since they got into a fight with the dog that was staying next door. For those that have heard the story, I rather not remember that part of the trip, so I'll just go ahead and remember sitting out on the patio with my girl, feet up, fire roaring at our outdoor fire pit, and the sounds of the waves crashing in the distance. (Shot with the Canon SD40) |

7.11.09 - Richard Avedon (http://www.richardavedon.com/) exhibit up at the San Francisco MOMA (http://www.sfmoma.org/). Sean, Dayna, Sophia and myself headed up to take a peek. Dayna and I first had an appointment at Palo Alto Medical, more blood giving for the ol baby checkup, so the first couple of shots are from the Mountain View Facility - great looking place. Anyways, back to the MOMA. Amazing photography, and definitely acts as inspiration going forward for me. Just the simplicity mixed in with the anonymous nature of some of Avedon's subjects makes for a fascinating exhibit of work. Could use less of the male nudity shots, but hey, its all art. The rest of the main museum offers countless numbers of art that made for a great afternoon - I now own myself a Picasso (see 6P6D1638)! Oh, and order the Garlic fries from the Cafe there, Awesome! (Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

7.19.09 - Since we have been on a museum craze recently and we have been seeing signs all over the place for the Samurai Exhibit at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum (http://www.asianart.org/), we decided to go check it out. Baby Wu to be is getting his edumacation on for sure!! It was our first time to the museum at their new location since they moved from Golden Gate park. Plus, I think I got my fair share of sun from the AACO tourney the day before, I could use some time indoors. The exhibition features more than 160 works from the Hosokawa family collection normally housed in the Eisei-Bunko Museum in Tokyo. No pictures are allowed in the Samurai exhibit itself, Lame-o-san, but I still had plenty to see and shoot. The museum is the largest in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian Art. Some 17,000 pieces make up the collection from all of Asian (designated by the land east of the Ural Mountains and Ural River, and Japan and Java - get your education on). After we left, Dayna and I walked the civic center farmers market as it was shutting down - good deals to be had! This all got us pretty hungry, so we decided to hit up Houston's for Dinner - Rack of ribs, baby! Oh, and yes, your car shocks work very well, Hun...(Shot with Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

7.24.09 - Jeff and Helen are still in California on their whirlwind trip, and since we apparently did not get enough of them during the week that they stayed with us, Dayna and I flew down to meet em for a crack at the Happiest Place on Earth, Disneyland, baby! We flew into SNA on Thursday night, and Jeff "Popcorn Tree" Liao and Helen "Indiana" Chen picked us up from the airport. Apparently HW57 was closed down, so was a typical LA cluster F traffic nightmare for them, but they showed up right on time and with excitement for Disney in their eyes...either that, or it was the anticipation to finish off the Charo Chicken that they picked up on the way to the airport (http://www.charochicken.com/) - I'll admit tho, Jeff called that one right, that is same damn good chicken. After cruising downtown Disney, 5 beers later (the benefit of sharing a 6pack with non drinkers) and a McD's run, we crashed out at our home for the next two days, The Anabella. We had a blast and yup, we skipped out on California Adventures, again - hell, we figure, we LIVE in California, what's to see for $30 more? Even through the oppressive Los Angeles heat that day we hit our fair share of rides - we took a short evening break for dinner outside the park and short crash at the hotel before tackling the evening hours. Helen kept great track of what we did, so here's our hit list for the trip. We scored on Buzz Light year since we got some free Fastpasses from the attendant due to a bum machine, so we had a total of like 8 Buzz fast passes. Also ran 3 trips on Splash Mountain thanks to fastpass as well - I still can't believe some people don't get how Fast passes work, but heck, their loss is our gain :) - Oh and I finally cracked into the big time, with my all time high 455k points at Astro Blasters!!! 1,000,000 here I come (of note, high score for the day was posted at 2,000,000 - I have a ways to go!! Jeff of course did his best to beat a personal record as well and kick back 6 boxes of popcorn through the course of the day!!! Good times with old, and NEW, friends! (Shot old skool style with the Canon 10D and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

9.12.09 - Napa, it's amazing that it took us this long to come up to visit, and the first time I spent a weekend up there - We are both now wondering why we are not here more! Debbie booked a house for the Wu/Olender clans to head up for the weekend, awesome house in Yountville close to everything - Wine tasting (or in Dayna's case, Wine sniffing), gourmet food and time with family - It was a blast. We managed to hit up plenty of wineries to keep us busy and buzzed in addition to dropping in at Boucheon as much as our wallets would allow us to. Foie Gras Dog snacks, crazy right? You know you are in a great area when the dogs eat this well. Dean and Delucca, you are daannggerrroouuussss. Sure sign of a fun trip, by Sunday, everyone was passed out, even the dogs! (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

9.19.09 - With one last shot to head to Hawai'i before the baby is born, Dayna and I planned an O'ahu and Big Island trip. Although we hit a slight snag with a detour on our original plans (thank you very much kidney stone), we managed to pull it off, and get to the island. We were instantly welcomed to a Hawaiian baby shower at Dayna's Mom's house right off the start - how's that for Aloha (Aloha Shower). Since everyone was working during the week, Dayna thought it would be a hoot to head out to Sea Life Park (where they filmed 50First Dates too - What the heck is a Wolphin you ask - check it out. Small, but fun park. Dayna also got to fulfill a life long dream to finally feed the sea lions at the park which she didn't get to do when she was a little kid (Seriously, how can anyone deny such a request?!) - Kupa'a was the recipient of that dream and ate like, well, a Seal. We hit our usual island hot spots when we are on the island, Waiola's for some shave Ice, Ojisan for some Misoyaki butterfish and of course my personal island favorite (seriously, I think its the best item on the island), Mr. Ojisan's Wafu steak (Yes, I was reeking of garlic for daaayyyss as Dayna can testify to), Alan Wong's Pineapple Room, stops at the Dole plantation, beach time with the turtles, a great sunset dinner on the beach with Kua Aina burgers, probably the BEST Matsumoto Shave Ice I have had, and a trip up to Waimea for some sun and surf. Now since this was a special trip for us (just shy of our 1 year anniversary), after 4 days on O'ahu, we headed out to the Big Island for a little pure RnR as our own way to celebrate with just the two of us. Our home away from home, the Four Seasons Hualalai of course. Beautiful relaxing stay - these guys just seem incapable of disappointing us. It was great being back there after the wedding. Yes, the signs say to not approach within 20 feet of sun bathing turtles, but apparently the reverse does not apply as those turtles came up to ME as I was lounging on the beach - honest! Well, another great great trip to Hawai'i, looks like the next time we step foot here, it will be as three :) (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

10.3.09 - Post Wedding Bachelor Party! Why have we not thought of this before? We decided to provide a post Wedding Bachelor party Vegas golf trip for Lance - Partners in crime involved, Dowdy, Vinny, myself and the newly married man, Lance. We shacked up at the Paris Hotel for the weekend as we hit up the tables and the links. Honestly, we were well behaved and decided not to make the movie "The Hangover" our personal journal for our weekend activities, but mostly cause we just could not find where Tyson lives. Cruising in the free upgraded Excursion made traveling with a bunch of tall bitches that much easier. Just too bad I was getting my ass beat at the Pai Gow tables right off the bat, but a late trip push helped to balance the check book before we left. Good times with a good group of friends. The Tuscany golf course was a great place to exercise our ball finding skills as well - Man, we used that entire bitch as our personal driving range. And for a a group that only got around 2hrs of sleep, we all shot in the 80's - and we're sticking to that story. Oh, and yes, Mowry's Prime Rib absolutely rocked. Sorry, we only have shots from the golf course as, well, we were busy otherwise, all I can say. (Shot with the Canon SD40) |

11.25.09 - As part of the Thanksgiving break, decided needed an additional break, so I called up Sophia to head up to the Zoo. Funny that it was our first trip with just the two of us, so it's nice to know the family now trusts me with a 6 year old - guess they better, I have my own on the way! The weather was perfect, so was a great day there. Sophia spends equal time in the Zoo exhibits as the playground area, so that was a first for me. I also have to say that I don't think I have spent so much time in the petting zoo before, but how can you deny those fat goats their free meals! Check out the American Gothic shot of Sophia :) (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |
||
2.15.10 - Was a great clear day in the South Bay, so Dayna and I called up the Wu's to see if they wanted to head up to the Zoo for the afternoon. As it was President's Day, figured might be a bit crowded, but with the kids in tow, figured would be okay - hey, its outside right? How crowded could it get? How F'in wrong were we? The line to get tickets was around 100 people deep! So we canned those plans, drove right out of the parking lot and decided to head over to hike around Land's End instead. Of course, San Francisco was completely covered in fog for a majority of the day, but ya know, it was still a great day - the fog lifted just enough for us to get some shots of the Golden Gate in the distance as well. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |
||
3.7.10 - Called up Debbie and Mom to see if they wanted to head up to Napa for part of the day (Cameron's first Napa trip too). Made reservations at Bouchon for lunch, so it was an easy sell on having them come up. Thomas Keller never disappoints, and of course I got my croque madame fix. On page 101 of the Bouchon cookbook, in case Dayna is reading this!! (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |
||
3.13.10 - First time for the Wu Family trio to head down to Santa Barbara for a weekend stay at Bacara - Was the entire Wu family too since the dogs came down with us - Oh, and thanks to Stevens Creek Infiniti for the loaner, and the free miles - sorry about the dog hair! Cameron got to see all our old haunts as well as see first hand, why Santa Barbara is awesome. Freebirds (Nachos is $13?!?!), Woodstock Pizza (umm, when the hell did a medium pizza cost so much??), Longboards - they never disappoint. Sitting in a stroller from the top of the Court House was probably not as exciting for Cam, but we also walked the pier and downtown of course. We also got dinner at our usual spot for Japanese, Arigato's - granted, we ate quicker and earlier than we usually do, but alas, the sacrifices parents do for their kids (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

4.16.10 - French Laundry Weekend - I was able to line up dinner reservations for the famed Thomas Keller 3 Michelin star restaurant in Yountville (Napa). Actually our second time here this year, so yes, that's just how we roll. However, this trip, we called out some additional epicurious friends to join us. Scott and Judy even made a special trip down from the Pacific Northwest for dinner (apparently as friends we are so-so, but as French laundry companions, and of course reservation holders, we are high on the list). Huge thanks to the Wu-lenders for joining us for the trip and watching Cameron - she's not quite a 3star diner just yet. Stationed from the house we were renting in Yountville, the next evening Kari made reservations at Chef Richard Reddington's REDD - another great choice. Fun weekend for sure and If it was not for the remote helicopters or Flight Control on the iphone, we would not have anything to do - well, other than the eating and drinking of course! I think we wore out the road between our house and Bouchon bakery (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

6.19.10 - Eager to get Cameron out as well as get the the dust collecting BOB out for a stroll, we called up Sean and Sophia to join us at Shoreline Park in Mountain View. We have never been there before to bike around, so it was a great day out with plenty to see as the park also connects with the Palo Alto Baylands park trail. Everyone was pretty much on a bike, but I donned the inline skates to motor Cameron around. Great warm day, and fun chance to spend with family. There was a slight Nascar-esche run in between Sophia and Sean toward the end of the ride, but she took it all in stride and even gave the "all clear" double thumbs up - she's a Rock - Fun day, and we'll sure be back. 6.25.10 - Wu family headed out to the California Academy of Science to get Cameron's learn on. She had a blast with the butterflies and seemed to especially be interested in the aquarium exhibit. She was a trooper all day and made for a great day up in SF. My guess is an aquarium trip very soon. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

7.5.10 As predicted, after a great 4th of July, we headed down to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Love the place, and since Cameron had such a great time, we decided to become Aquarium members - maybe we have a marine biologist on our hands here... (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

7.18.10 - The desire was to get to Angel Island early for a hike around, the reality of it was, we could not make the early ferry, so had to take the afternoon one which limited out time on the island. However, we did get to hang out at the Ferry building for a while before we headed out. The other Wu clan joined me, Dyana, Cameron, and Doreen as well for the day. It was bound to be a great day as we managed to get Keona to smile before we even got to the island. Highlights were getting Morel Mushrooms for a risotto to be made at a later date, amazing hotdogs from the Prather Ranch Meat Company, organic donuts (yeah, whhaaaatt?), and Doreen's chicken salad recipe. Downsides were few, but one was definitely Kevin and I hauling ass down the Embarcadero, jumping in a cab, frantic ride through traffic (and our cab driver getting the location wrong) to get our cars out of the parking garage (only to find out they actually do in fact have after hours exit). The other was dinner that we got at Sinbad's Pier2 restaurant - The place seemed to be an icon of San Francisco, so how bad could it be? We found out...Nonetheless, it did not ruin a fun day, and the worst of it was less cash than we had before, but an understanding that YELP is around for a good reason. 8.19.10 - It was about time we got around to this - it was either going to be a good trip, or a colossal parental failure. Here we go, "Cameron's first plane ride" - and we figured might as well go big or stay home. Destination, Hawai'i. The decision turned out to be great, with Cameron being awesome on the flight - she did not sleep much, but we kept her entertained and well hydrated. All the tips from infant fliers definitely paid off. Our first destination was the island of Maui. We stayed at a condo that Dayna lined up at the Kamaole Sands (right across from the beach). Cameron was getting a lot of new experiences on this trip, so it was a blast to show her everything. Her first steps on Hawaiian sand on Kamaole Beach in Keihi, her fist soaking in the Pacific Ocean, her first tan lines, her first encounter with Poi (success), and first time getting to meet Grandma Song who is there with Clifton in Makawao. Cameron loved visiting with them, and really hit it off with Grandma right off the bat. It was a joy to see. After a few days in Maui, we headed to O'ahu to meet up with Kathy who flew out to hang with us. Being right on the ocean was awesome, so we got to swim and kayak to our hearts content. More firsts for Cameron : Shave Ice all over the place, experiencing Hawaiian humidity (check out Cam's crazy hair), Dole Pineapple whips, seeing the turtles, playing with coconuts (I am expert coconut opener now so go ahead and ask) visiting the Bishop Museum, getting to meet the Parks (Alex just looovvesss Sean), meeting the Song clan, and of course getting to play with Anson and Risa. Why we ever leave, I don't know. Although the crabs on the beach and the toad at the house were all probably very happy to see us leave. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

9.12.10 - Taking advantage of the membership, and testing out the baby carrier we are borrowing from Sean/Debbie, we headed back down to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We first had to stop for our usual pizza stop for a slice then we got into the aquarium. Cameron was great in the carrier and enjoyed being re-hatched in the penguin egg :) (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |
||
9.19.10 - Sophia and Doreen joined us for a day over at the San Francisco Zoo. Mostly overcast day in SF with some on/off rain, but was still a good day to be there as the crowds were kept at bay due to the less than ideal weather. Seeing Cam's reaction on the puffer train was well worth the admission price, let alone the, in Sophia's words, "special hugging" kangaroos that we saw - hahaha - Avoid asking the information booth attendant any questions, she knows nothing :) (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

12.30.10 - With the new year right around the corner, the ol UCSB crowd decided to get the families together for a trip down to the Monterey Aquarium - complete with our family memberships, Kevin and clan, and Gil and clan joined us for the day. Was a fun day down there, sure are different than the non-kid days of old, but now we get to share in the fun with our little ones in tow. The kids seemed to have a great time with the penguin who was keeping them fascinated - but one by one, they all started to drift off - the sign of a good day, kids passed out in the car ride home. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

1.17.11 - Decided to put Sophia's toughness to the test, and take her out to Planet Granite (http://www.planetgranite.com) for the afternoon. Turns out that yes, she's a pretty tough little girl. She went up pretty much everything that we threw her on, including the big giant wall. She mostly kept to the color paths as well, so I was definitely impressed. Debbie assisted in helping to take pics while I did my best to keep Sohia from falling 60+ feet :) - Great job, Sophia! (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

1.29.11 - Happy Hollow (http://www.hhpz.org/)! There's a zoo in San Jose, no way - at least that would have been my response before we had Cameron. Apparently everyone that has kids knows about this place, and I can see why, its a great place for em and a very short kid friendly drive to get there too. We met up with Mike, Silvia, Aly, Shawn, Kari, and Piper for the morning. It was great to get everyone together as we have not seen Mike and Silvia in forever (and sadly this is the first time we have met Aly too!) - she's a Blueberry monster!!! (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |
||
2.6.11 - It's February, and its peaking around 70 degrees - Man, I love California. Dayna and I decided to take advantage of a great day out and went for a bike ride around Shoreline Park. First time taking the sidecar off road and Cameron was a tough lil trooper and didn't complain one bit - If this is Winter, can't wait for summer! (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 14-40 f/4.0L USM) |

2.11.11 - Weekend up in Napa - let's go ahead and call it Anti-Valentines weekend since none of us really believe it to be a real holiday - However, can't think of a better place to blow around $600/person on meals alone for a single weekend! Started with lunch with Debbie on Friday at Chandon then dinner at REDD (http://www.reddnapavalley.com). Then on Saturday the usual breakfast fare from Bouchon and then we were off to lunch at Morimoto Napa in downtown (http://www.morimotonapa.com/) on Saturday with Doreen, Debbie, Vinny, Lance and Maggie - service was regrettably pedestrian, but the food was absolutely spectacular. I had as part of my lunch the Mizudako (Raw octopus) but was disappointed in that it was not the squirming tentacles as expected (yes, I was looking forward to the live legs) - nonetheless, the dish was excellent. Also on my menu was the Toro tartar - the absolute best fish dish I have ever had. Saturday night was a stop at Gott's Roadside (http://gottsroadside.com/) for the best burgers in Napa (and a great story from the kid cashier). The next morning was solid fasting in the morning as we dipped our toes into the high life with lunch at The French Laundry. Nothing needs to be said about the Laundry, as the name and the food speaks for itself. We finished the day out by getting hammered at Merryvale Vineyards in St. Helena where Vinny Pablo Chan now carries infamous status. Also proves that you don't all need to get the premiere tasting menu, just make sure the guy buying the most wine does, and we drink on his behalf (thanks Lance). Great weekend filled with plenty of food binges, Molly the Cat being tortured by the dogs, fast games of Card Monopoly, and Xbox Dance Central. Here's to cheap Ramen meals for the rest of the year! (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

2.21.11 - Finding ourselves in the middle of a long weekend, we decided to get our learn on again and grab Sophia for a trip to the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco (http://www.calacademy.org/). Building off previous trips, we tried to get up there early to avoid sell out (yes, this museum does sell out routinely). We did get great parking at 10am (albeit $20 spent there) only to stand in line for half an hour til they opened at 11am (on Sunday they open later - now we know). Fun time at the museum of course as the place is awesome, but we were reminded on how un-cheap it is to visit once you add parking, lunch at the cafe (avoid the Ramen), and ticket prices. Nonetheless, a small price to pay for some educatin' right? But where was my lil Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker?!?! (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |

3.20.11 - Cameron's first trip to the show, and what a week it was. With Dad and Mom with us, we just got into Kirkwood ahead of the big storm that shut the roads down on Monday. Kirkwood was reporting over 700" of snow this season, so even this deep into March, we most definitely picked a great time to go. Dayna and I enjoyed full powder days for Tuesday and Wednesday with minimal people around to track everything up which was great given this was our first trip back to the snow in two seasons. The winds picked up a bit on Wednesday, but Dayna and I were too tired to continue the rest of the day anyways. Cameron had a blast in her snowsuit and proved quite the adventurous one exploring the new conditions. Cold cheeks were not enough to get her to come back inside, so looks like we have a snow bunny on our hands for sure. With conditions worsening, we headed out on Thursday in probably the worst conditions I have ever seen. Lucky for us we got in behind the CalTrain crew, otherwise, we assuredly would have been in trouble given the snow was so high and windy, the road markers were nonexistent for most of the drive, even down to 4000feet. After a stop at Cook's Station (real nice people in there, especially on a snowed in day) for some lunch, we were well on our way home only to be welcomed back to the valley with torrential rain. It was all a spectacular, albeit very LUCKY, weekend for the Wu's. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |

4.3.11 - First time for me to join Dayna and Cameron to Hidden Villa in Los Altos (http://www.hiddenvilla.org). We called up the other Wu's to join us as well. The place is great for some short hikes, playing around with some chickens, or petting the farm animals. Yes, Cameron is a fan of reading her Boyton books with chickens in them and definitively not a big fan of chickens running about and pecking at her relentlessly. I can attest, that yes, those buggers peck and bite dang hard! Crazed chickens aside, this was a fun place to let the kids run around and enjoy a nice stroll away from the hubbub of the Valley on a warn Sunday. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 24-70 f/2.8L USM) |
||
4.17.11 - Debbie and Sophia were free for the day so we took the chance to head up for a hike in the hills. We took our surefooted group to the Saratoga Gap Trail. We took a break at the waterfall and had a quick snap break before getti ng our Nature on. It was a nice hike, one we hope to repeat many times with the kids. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |
||
4.22.11 - Now that I write this, I don't remember where Dayna actually was this day, but I just remember that it was a father daughter type of day. Cameron and I decided to head up on CalTrain to San Francisco. We had these grand aspirations to get down to the Ferry building and walk around, but the trip was tiring enough that we just cruised around AT&T Park showing off her Giants jersey - was still a really fun trip with a great lil daughter. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM) |
||
5.1.11 - San Francisco Zoo was full of Wu's today! Headed up with Kevin and family to take in a great Spring day at the zoo. Really fantastic getting the families together. Cameron remains a nonfan of the goats at the petting zoo, but we did have great encounters with the barn owl as well as the grizzlies. (Shot with the Canon 1D MarkIII and 17-40 f/4.0L USM and 300mm f/2.8L) |
||
5.22.11 - Back to the San Francisco zoo (love the family membership pass) but this time we met up with Travis and family. This was the first time we got together with them with the kids in tow, so was a great day. We camped out by the playground so the kids could play in the playground and this time came prepared with picnic items to enjoy the afternoon. Complete with our own close encounter with a peacock.
